Why Annual Well-Woman Exams Are Essential

Well-woman exams are an essential way to minimize health risks.  From your first period through your reproductive years and menopause, the well-woman exam, annual exam, pelvic exam, or gynecological exam is an important doctor visit. Performed by your OBGYN, it provides not only a time for your doctor to examine you but also an opportunity to keep you up to date with routine screenings. It is a time for you to discuss health matters with her in a safe and supportive environment.

Why You Shouldn’t Skip Well-Woman Exams

Annual well-woman exams are considered a best practice in preventive health. For this reason, many insurance companies cover the cost of annual well-woman exams, so take advantage of this so you can stay on top of your health. Through this examination which includes vital signs and a physical examination, your OBGYN can order further immunizations, blood work, and tests, such as bone density, screening colonoscopies, and the gold standard of breast cancer detection, the mammogram. Talk to your doctor about when you need to start mammograms, as family health history often indicates younger women should start these much earlier than age 40.

How Often to Have a Well-Woman Exam

We recommend women have annual exams, particularly if they are sexually active. Annual pelvic exams can detect and prevent sexually transmitted infections as well as cervical cancer and other issues. The breast exam that is part of the visit also can detect breast cancer early, making it more treatable with less invasive methods.

    Ask Questions at Annual Exams

The well-woman exam by your OBGYN is the perfect time to ask questions about your concerns. Some topics you may want to cover include:

    • Birth control methods
    • Family health history
    • Menstrual cycles
    • Breast cancer screening and concerns
    • STI screening

Your OBGYN is an important member of your healthcare team. Develop a relationship with them through open dialogue at the well-woman exam and other visits.
